Week 3 - July 21-25, 2008

The end of dry weather slowed work a little, but also gave us the opportunity to view how the water entered and exited the side. This reaffirmed design elements and gave us the opportunity to see how the preliminary drainage layer was working.

We begin this week’s tour at Miller School looking Southwesterly from the area that will be the Babe Ruth League field. This area required the removal of Alders and undergrowth, and this process continues. The trees in the background are along West Main Street and Benner Hill.

Cutting the perimeter at this end of the complex also gives a glimpse of what will follow Phase I, when we hope to add the tennis court and basketball area on the other side of the wetland. That area is located beyond the brush in the distance on the right-hand side of this photograph.

Coming around the site on the Kalers Corner Street side, Crooker is moving forward with laying out the basic road profile, and positioning boulders for the retaining wall above this area. Notice the degree of the change in elevation between the adjacent land and the field level. This dramatic change will be tapered in the final stage of the work using the loam harvested from the site. Directly ahead, in the distance, is the location of the first photo in this week’s update.

Referring to the above photo as a starting point, the next photo shows how the crew is lowering the field elevation and compacting the subsurface prior to installation of the drainage layer.

A parking area is one of the many enhancements that will be part of this site. Here is a view from the parking area looking toward the Little League Field and the upper portion of the site beyond the wetlands. The level of the parking area will be lowered as the crew begins to install the underground drainage system.

One of the key requirements for the design of the site is the ability of the fields to drain so that they will playable soon after rain or the spring thaw. This photo shows the preliminary drainage layer in place on a portion of the Little League Field. Remembering the amount of rain we received this week, and the standing water elsewhere on the site, the drainage design is working even at this early stage. The surface color difference is the sand layer on top of the clay.
