The rain continued to fall this week. However, with most of the material on site, the crew could continue work grading and leveling. Some work was delayed by the storms and water accumulation, but again this allowed us to see if the drainage plan was working.
This week we begin our tour at Miller School again. This is the view from the playground looking down the path to the Recreation Site. This close proximity will permit the school to use these fields for physical education without needing to cross busy Route 32.
The crew is continuing to grub-out and harvest loan from the area adjacent to Miller. This is part of the Babe Ruth League field. This area is affected by the rain since it is still mostly clay.
This view of the perimeter road along side the Babe Ruth Field shows the water accumulation that is slowing work on this side of the field.
As we move around the complex to the southeast corner, we have a view of the parking lot and the stone retaining wall. You will notice the drier appearance. This is partially due to drainage system that is installed, and the sand and gravel layers.
Here is a portion of that drainage system called, Grassed Undersurface Soil Filters (GUSF). Basically, they are built by layering various combinations of gravel and soil to filter hard surface run-off before it can enter the Medomak Watershed. This hole is where the gravel filter is being installed. After construction, it will appear as a shallow depression.
This photo shows the Little League Field from the parking lot level. The parking lot will be slightly higher to create a positive elevation for draining water from the site. You can also see the various gravel and soil combinations being spread on the playing fields.
We end this week’s tour by looking at the field level again as the crew works to install the drainage layer of sand and gravel. The field is beginning to show the crowning that will drain rainwater toward the wetland. You can also see the retaining wall that is being topped off with soil.
